Stipple ceiling removal
Texture added to Alta Vista ceilings in the 1970s and 1980s dates a room more than any wall colour. We scrape, skim to smooth, prime and paint. As with all pre-1980 texture, we test for asbestos before disturbing anything.
Mid-century bungalows brought properly up to date.
Ottawa House & Cabinet Painting serves Alta Vista, Elmvale Acres, Guildwood Estates, Applewood Acres, Riverview Park, Hawthorne Meadows and Canterbury — interior and exterior painting, ceiling texture removal, cabinet refinishing and drywall repair, on a free on-site estimate.
Alta Vista is one of Ottawa’s best mid-century neighbourhoods, and its homes come with a consistent set of painting problems. These are mostly 1950s and 1960s bungalows and splits on generous lots: plaster or early drywall, textured ceilings added later, oil-based trim throughout, dark-stained wood doors and panelling, and original kitchens with solid cabinet boxes. Handled well, the result is a bright, contemporary interior that keeps the mid-century character rather than flattening it.
Chiefly 1950s–1970s bungalows, side-splits and two-storeys on large mature lots, with brick and stone fronts, wood or aluminum siding, and a growing number of gut renovations and second-storey additions.
Every community in Ottawa has its own housing stock and its own recurring problems. These are the ones we see most in Alta Vista.

Dark stained trim, panelled doors and wood wall panelling are everywhere in this neighbourhood. Painting them out is transformative — provided the surface is degreased, deglossed and bonded-primed first, which is exactly the step most repaint failures skip.
Cabinet boxes from this era were built better than most of what is sold now. Refinishing them keeps the layout and the quality and changes only the finish, at a fraction of a full kitchen replacement.
Sixty-year-old walls have settlement cracks, old anchors and previous patches that need proper repair before paint rather than a skim of filler under the colour.

No charge, no obligation, and a written fixed price before any work starts.
Yes, and it is one of the highest-impact things you can do in an Alta Vista home. The catch is preparation: stained and varnished wood must be cleaned, deglossed and primed with a bonding or shellac-based primer. Paint applied straight onto old varnish will peel off in strips, which is why so many DIY attempts fail.
A typical Alta Vista bungalow — walls, ceilings, trim and doors — is usually three to five working days. Adding ceiling texture removal or extensive trim conversion pushes that toward seven to nine days, because the prep is what takes the time.
Regularly. Riverview Park, Elmvale Acres and the streets around the General campus are all inside our core service area, and we can schedule around shift work if that helps.
We default to low-VOC and zero-VOC lines from Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams, the same products used in hospitals and daycares. Most families stay in the home throughout the project. For ceiling texture removal we seal the work area off entirely.
